Basic Wing Chun Movements

Ji Zi Kim Joeng Maa

Southern Horse Stance

This stance is used to develop your center of balance while learning to effectively use both arms for offense and defense. The first form is done entirely in this stance, emphasizing its importance. It is also used to develop the ability to drive power from the legs to the point where the opponent is being attacked.

Chong

Ready Position

The forward hand is extended and positioned horizontally on the centerline while the other hand is held further back. This creates a triangle like structure which allows deflection to either side of the body.

Tan Sau

Palm Up Hand

Tan Sau can be applied in a variety of ways, but the basic application is to redirect an attack away from the body.

Paak Sau

Slapping Hand

Paak Sau or slapping block is used to slap a strike away, allowing the hand to return to the centerline immediately.

Jum Sau

Sinking hand

This block is used to deflect lower strikes downward while attacking the arm simultaneously.

Gum Sau

Pinning Hand

This block is combined with other techniques to pin one of the opponent's arms, restricting or trapping their other arm, and creating an opening for an attack.

Bong Sau

Wing arm

This block is used for deflection of an attack, and is often used as an intermediate technique.

Gwat Sau

Wiping Hand

This block is used to defend against lower strikes while deflecting them away from the center of the body.
